Search ends for missing Pueblo man
While family members from as far away as the Denver area searched for James Padilla last week in Pueblo, the missing 68-year-old man was lying dead in a morgue. Pueblo County Coroner Jim Kramer says his office couldn't find Padilla's family. "We look for family locally but we had no preliminary leads as to lead us anywhere," said Kramer.
Relatives say Padilla had a heart attack at his home at an assisted living complex in downtown Pueblo. Padilla was a widower and lived alone. Padilla was taken to St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center and apparently told doctors who he was. But the coroner says Padilla died and there was no information about his next of kin.
Last Friday, Padilla's son told News First they searched everywhere for his missing father. "I've checked the local hospitals. I've checked the jails, the morgue," said Wayne Padilla. However, Kramer says the family did not contact the Pueblo County Coroner's office.
The hospital wouldn't talk about this specific case, but a spokesperson says they can't give relatives any information about deaths over the phone. "If a family member fears the worst in the case of a loved one they do need to actually come to the hospital and bring documentation that they are indeed a family member before any information can be released," said Rochelle Kelly Devargas, a spokesperson for St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center.
Both the hospital and the coroner say they make every attempt to notify family members about deaths. They strongly advise everyone to keep a list of emergency contacts with them at all times, and also at their homes. The Coroner say that was the missing link that kept Padilla's family in the dark for so long.
